to alleviate immediate sufferings of those who had been badly affected by the cyclone - provision of basic needs, such as medicine, shelters, water, food etc

Mid-Term

REHABILITATION WORK
this is a mid-term project, where we undertake projects to facilitate those affected in getting back to their jobs, especially farming. Efforts are being made to provide basic necessities such as stationeries and uniforms for students, as well as repair suitable buildings such as rural monasteries to be used as temporary schools.

Table: Summary of Things Done by FireFly Mission – Cyclone Nargis Project

(as at 4 August 2008)

Relief (Immediate)

-        Donated more than 1,000kg of Relief Medicine to Hospitals in Bogale, Pyapon and Dedaye.

-        Purchased and Donated more than 1,100 sets of Utensils/Clothing/Mosquito Nets/etc to villages in Bogale, Dedaye, Moulmeingyun & Pyapon townships.

-        Purchased & Donated more than 100 tonnes of Rice/Dahl/Cooking Oil/Onions/etc to villages in Bogale, Dedaye, Moulmeingyun & Pyapon townships.

 

Mid-Term Rehabilitation

-        Rice Replantation Programme – provided rice seeds/tilling machines/fuel to rice farmers in 13 villages at Bogale & Moulmeingyun townships. Successfully replanted more than 4,200 acres of rice field.

-        Repaired 2 badly damaged monasteries – currently used as temporary schools, accommodating close to 300 students

-        Donated stationeries and uniforms to students studying in rural schools at Bogale, Dedaye, Moulmeingyun & Pyapon townships.

-     Awarded bursaries to 178 students from the affected delta areas

 

Long-Term Rehabilitation

-        Identified 7 schools (2 middle and 5 primary) for rebuilding – located in villages at Bogale, Dedaye, Moulmeingyun & Pyapon townships.

-        To-date one school rebuilding had been completed & the other is 70% completed

-        Identified 2 rural clinics for rebuilding – located Taman village, Bogale Township & Byingazee, Pyapon Township

Distributed Relief Medical Supplies (about 150kg) to Pyapon Hospital

·

Distributed Relief Medical Supplies (about 200kg) to Bogale Hospital

·

Purchased & Distributed about 10 tonnes of Relief Food Items (Rice, Dahl & Cooking Oil) to about 4,000 victims staying in 8 villages located at the Dedaye Township

·

Distributed 1,285 sets of stationeries to students in villages located at the Bogale, Moulmeingyun, Pyapon and Dedaye Townships

·

Distributed sandals, biscuits, and others to villages located at the Bogale, Moulmeingyun, Pyapon and Dedaye Townships

Latest Update from the Delta (7 July 2008)
· Shou Chaung village’s school was completed on the 30 June 2008 and the the school was reopened on the 1st July by the Venerable from Kyar Chaung
· Nyein Oo monastery roof was repaired and it is being used to run the school
·

Comprehensive Rice Replantation Programme in  5 villages in the township of Mawlemyaing Gyun: Shou Chaung, Kyar Chaung, Ta Pyay Chaung, Nyein Oo & Ziphyu.

- A total of 10 machines were bought for ploughing

- Diesel fuel were provided
- Rice seeds were procured & distributed
-  Total acreage covered is 1,604 acres. The actual size is more than 1,604 because some farmers had finished tilling their own land
- By end of July, all the land in the 5 villages should be ploughed and planted
· Fund had been donated to Ven U Sopaka who will coordinate the rebuilding of school at Ta Pyay Chaung Village  (This is the 7th School identified for Post-Cyclone Rebuilding Project)

 

Bursaries Award (25 June 2008)
·

We had awarded 3,710,000 kyats worth of bursaries to students who had lost their parents in the cyclone. 173 students from the Basic Education (Primary & Middle School Level) and 5 students from Higher Education. We awarded 20,000 kyats each to the students from the Basic Education and 50,000 each to students from the Higher Education.

Those students are from the delta region: Latputta, Mawkyun, Bogalay, Daydaye and Warkhema townships.
This is done in collaboration with our partner, Border Area Development Association

 

TEAM 2 (10-15 June 2008)

·

Distributed about 80 tonnes of Relief Food Items (Rice) to about 4,000 victims staying in 9 villages located in Bogale, Moulmeingyun and Dedaye Townships

·

Distributed about 10 tonnes of Relief Food Items (Rice, Biscuits, Canned Food, Instant Noodles, Milk Powder etc) to villages located in Dedaye Township

·

Purchased and distributed 1,100 of Necessity Items (clothing, mosquito net, utensils etc) to 1,100 families staying in 13 villages located in Bogale, Moulmeingyun and Dedaye Townships

·

Distributed Relief Medical Supplies (about 250kg) to Dedaye Hospital

·

Distributed Relief Medical Supplies (about 600kg) to Pyapon Relief Medical Camp

·

To purchase and distribute rice seeds and ploughing machines to replant about 3,000 acres of rice farm - we will also supply the diesel fuel for the 1st replanting of rice after cyclone

·

Tarpaulin (110 rolls of 100 yds) supplied to repair houses and for temporary schools

·

Reconstruction of school in Shouchyaung Village is progressing well, to be completed in a few weeks time

·

In addition had also identified 5 more schools for reconstruction - had requested our partners in compassion to draft plans of schools and prepare estimated budget

·

Had also identified 2 destroyed clinics in Taman and Byinggazee villages, and had pledged to sponsor the reconstruction

our 1st Metta & Karuna team had successfully bring along about 500kg (est S$50,000) medicinal items to cyclone-stricken areas in Myanmar.
