project food-aid 2002

In April 2002, food parcels worth S$10/- each were distributed to 1,030 poor families in Galle, Sri Lanka.

The distribution was held on the eve of the Singhala New Year and brought much joy to their festivities and celebrations.

The occasion was graced by the Mayor of Galle, Mr Mansoor Marikar.

Books, ball pens, stationery sets, crayon, candies, backpacks etc were also distributed to 4 schools and 2 children's homes.

The five volunteers who went to Sri Lanka from Singapore for the Project were joined by nine Singaporeans based in Colombo, all members of the Singapore (Sri Lanka) Club.

The Project also received very strong support and endorsement from the Singapore High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, H.E. Mr Tan Kah Hoe.

Subject: Support and Donations for Sri Lanka Project

Dear Friends,

I'm back after completing Project Foodaid in Sri Lanka. It was very fruitful and rewarding trip. We were very fortunate and extremely grateful for the help that we received from the 8 Singaporeans based in Sri Lanka. They drove 3-4 hours from Colombo to Galle to help us with the distribution on 12 April.

Thank you very much for your help, support and generous donations to Project Foodaid. Your effort and donation enabled many poor families in Galle, south of Sri Lanka to have a more joyous Singhala New Year which was celebrated on 13 April, the day after we did the distribution. We distributed a total of 1,030 food parcels worth S$10/- each and also had excess funds to purchase and distribute candies, books, ball pens, stationery sets, crayons etc to 4 schools and 2 children's homes in the Galle area.

I very much appreciate your help and contribution to the success of the Project. I know there are many more friends, relatives and colleagues who helped and contributed in one way or another to Project Foodaid and I would also like to thank them. Please convey my gratitude to them on my behalf as I know I have left many names out.

With sincere thanks and regards,
Siew Kiang
coordinator, project food-aid 2002
