FIREFLY MISSION is very happy to announce
PROJECT EKACCTRA
(Pali for Under One
Umbrella)
Dear fireflies,
Vesak 2005 - Project Ekacctra
Vesak day is around the corner again. FIREFLY MISSION is
very happy to announce PROJECT
EKACCTRA (Pali for Under One Umbrella).
A brother donor has
donated a sound system in the name of Firefly Mission to the
TEMPLE OF THE SACRED TOOTH RELIC (SRI DALADA MALIGAWA)IN
KANDY, SRI LANKA. We want to invite fellow fireflies to
be co-sponsors. The system has
been paid so 100% of your contributions go into Firefly's
projects in Sri Lanka.
The presentation ceremony and dana
will be conducted during our trip to Sri Lanka in June (10
to 18 June).
As you are aware, the
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic holds the tooth relic of
the Buddha and is a world famous pilgrimage site. This
temple is located in the Sacred city of Kandy, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. In Jan 1988, the Sacred Tooth Relic
temple was bombed and suffered severe damage. This prompted
international condemnation at the time.
This sound system has a
voice alarm system. During normal functioning of the temple
it can be used for public address and broadcasting
purposes. In the event of an emergency, the voice
alarm system can be used to direct and evacuate people to
safety. This system facilitates activities of the temple
and serve to protect the Temple, The Holy Relics and
hundreds of visitors who visit everyday. PROJECT
EKACCTRA is an extremely meaningful gift for
celebration of Vesak 2005.
Firefly invites Fireflies
and friends to share this meritorious deed.

Significance of Ekacctra
EKACCTRA (Pali for Under One Umbrella). The Umbrella or
Parasol is a symbol of social rank and status in many
Theravada Buddhist countries. The Buddha is often shown with
a parasol as a sign of respect.
Firefly Mission has
rallied members in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami.
Apart from donation of water tanks, household goods and
food, Firefly is also committed to remain engaged in the
long run; reaching out to spiritual and physical needs of
the local population. The donation of the sound system to
the Tooth Relic temple is a highly symbolic and significant
gesture to the spiritual needs of the people while the
donations sustain their long term physical needs.
In this
way, both spiritual and physical needs are brought
together under one parasol, and both Sinhalese and Buddhist
from all over ther world are united under the same Parasol
of the Dharma.
The parasol idea was
conceptualised by Chow Wah and the Pali name, EKACCTRA, given
by Venerable Dr. Galle Udita, Chief Monk of Buddha Vihara
Society, General Secretary of International Buddhist Organisation
and Lecturer in the Pali College in Singapore.
This is a private event
extended to friends and family members only. Firefly
projects operate on a ZERO overhead basis. 100% of the funds
raised are used directly on the projects that are
undertaken. All members pay for their own travel expenses
when they go on firefly missions.
Thank you and best wishes
for Vesak 2005.
With Metta,
Chan CW
