Sri Lanka Project 2019 Updates

Project Briefing for Clean Water Project

Background

In Sri Lanka, there is an increase in the number of persons suffering from renal failure due to   CKDu  (Chronic Kidney Disease from unknown causes) especially in the Central Northern Province. Though the exact causes of CKDu remains a subject of much debate, there is little argument that contaminated water is one of the key determinants. The provision of clean potable water through the RO (Reverse Osmosis) system is a strong mitigating factor in reducing CKDu.

Since 2016, FFM has undertaken a total of 16 Reverse Osmosis Projects, all in the areas affected by CKDu, in partnership with the Sri Lanka Navy.

B) Eye Operation

Since 2018 Firefly Mission has contributed to the free cataract surgeries services by the Karuna Trust. Karuna Trust is set up by Dr Mahinda Karunaratne in Sept 2017 to provide free community eye care services for low income families. Besides the community eye clinic in Colombo, the Karuna Trust organizes monthly mobile eye camps in rural areas, providing free eye checks and diagnosis. Free surgeries are provided for those identified with cataract at selected hospitals by the Trust which also facilitates the necessary logistics such as transport and meals. The Trust provides an average of 50 cataract operations each month.  The cost for each cataract operation is about S$100. For 2019, FFM sponsored S$10k which pays for about 100 operations.
